Rockland St Mary Primary School: An Eco-school
At Rockland St Mary Primary School, we are proud of our commitment to caring for our environment and the unique natural world around us. We proud to say we have achievied the internationally recognised Eco-Schools Green Flag award, which celebrates schools that empower young people to make a positive difference for the environment and their communities.
The Eco-Schools Green Flag is awarded to schools that demonstrate a strong commitment to sustainability, environmental education, and pupil-led action. Through this journey, our children are developing the knowledge, skills, and confidence to become responsible global citizens who care deeply about the future of our planet.
Our location within the beautiful Broads community provides endless opportunities for children to explore and appreciate the natural environment. Surrounded by rivers, marshes, wildlife, and protected habitats, we encourage our pupils to develop a deep understanding of the importance of conservation and sustainability in the place we are fortunate to call home.
We are incredibly grateful for the support of local wildlife organisations and community groups who help enrich our environmental learning. Partnerships with groups including South Yare Wildlife Group and Wheatfen Nature Reserve provide valuable opportunities for our pupils to experience hands-on learning about local habitats, biodiversity, and conservation. These connections help children understand how small actions can make a big impact in protecting the environment for future generations.
Our Eco-Schools work reflects our school values:
- Believe – We encourage children to believe they can make a difference and inspire positive change within their community and beyond.
- Explore – We nurture curiosity about the natural world, giving children opportunities to learn from and engage with the unique environment of the Norfolk Broads.
- Achieve – We support pupils in developing the knowledge, confidence, and responsibility needed to become environmentally aware citizens who contribute positively to the world around them.
Through our Eco-Schools journey, we aim to create a culture of respect, responsibility, and sustainability across our whole school community. Together, we are helping our children grow into thoughtful, caring individuals who understand the importance of protecting and valuing the world we share.
